Playing Up an Age Group in Travel

  • Only ASA’s Soccer Director, Brendan Murphy, with concurrence of the Board, and through prior observance of the player, discussion with the player’s coaches and performance of the player at assessments will determine whether a player shall be allowed to play up on the "A" team at the next age group.
  • Players must attend their own age-group tryout.  If the DOC sees an exceptional player that may benefit from moving to a different age group, he/she will be approached at tryouts.  If you choose to attend the older team tryout without approval, you risk not being placed on either team
  • THE CLUB ENDEAVORS TO MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY WITHIN OUR AGE GROUPS AND WILL NOT MOVE PLAYERS BECAUSE THE PARENT THINKS THEIR CHILD SHOULD PLAY UP OR BECAUSE A PLAYER WANTS TO BE WITH FRIENDS. THIS IS GOING TO BE A RARE INSTANCE WHEN APPROVED AND WILL BE BASED SOLELY UPON THE SOCCER ABILITY OF THE PLAYER INVOLVED.
  • ASA reserves the right to deny a position to any player who does not measure up to the standard of the older age group, regardless of having played up in the past.
  • If according to the club’s Director of Coaching and the Travel Coordinator the player will be an influential or impact player (will be in the top seven or eight)  in the older age group, then the DOC will approach the parents and player about the possibility of playing up.  This means that a player must be clearly an "A" player AND one of the top 7 players in ability in the entire older age group.  This means that the player does not only have to be capable of playing at that age but clearly be better than the other players.

  • A player who is new to ASA or returning to ASA will NOT be allowed to try out with the older age group at assessments unless they have received prior permission to do that by the Soccer Director. No walk up play up requests will be permitted at assessments.
  • If a player played up last year and wishes to "try-out" for the next older age group he/she must receive advanced permission from the Soccer Director via email at brendan@amherstsoccer.com.
  • The decision is solely within the discretion of the Soccer Director. If a player does not receive prior permission from the Soccer Director before assessments, he/she will not be allowed to try out with the older age group at assessments. There will be no exceptions
  • At certain times, we may allow a number of players for a second or third team to play up to allow the formation of a team.  This is usually a "b" or "c" team and is allowed because not doing so would deny many children a chance to play (ie:  we have 8 each-13 year olds and 8 each 14 year olds after forming initial teams.  in this circumstance, we will form a 14 year old team to allow all to play and place it in a low division)  This is not considered a play up.   It is not considered a play-up for ASA to allow a U8 to play U9 travel soccer.  This also will be at the DOC’s discretion based upon his observations of the player and their readiness for travel soccer.  A returning U8 player (that played the year at U9) may be required to spend another year at U9.

  • We will try do what we feel is best for the player, not the coach or the parent .  Carpooling, siblings, school friends or a desire to play for a particular coach are not valid reasons for a play-up.
